Responsible Use¶
Purpose¶
abovepy provides access to publicly available geospatial data collected and published by the Commonwealth of Kentucky through the KyFromAbove program. This document outlines expectations for responsible use of the library and the data it provides.
Permitted Uses¶
All KyFromAbove data accessed through abovepy is public government data. The library and the data it retrieves may be used for:
- Government GIS analysis and planning
- Academic and scientific research
- Journalism and public interest reporting
- Disaster response and emergency management
- Environmental monitoring and conservation
- Urban and regional planning
- Infrastructure assessment and engineering
- Commercial applications (subject to GPL-3.0 license terms for the library)
Attribution¶
When publishing work that uses KyFromAbove data, please credit:
Data provided by the KyFromAbove program, Kentucky Division of Geographic Information.

Data Limitations¶
Users should be aware that:
- Elevation data is approximate and not suitable for legal survey purposes
- Orthoimagery reflects conditions at the time of capture, not current state
- Data accuracy varies by collection phase and methodology

Expectations¶
- Use data responsibly and in accordance with applicable laws
- Do not misrepresent derived products as official government records
- Report data quality issues through appropriate channels (see SUPPORT.md)
- Respect the intent of public data programs: transparency and public benefit
License¶
abovepy is licensed under GPL-3.0-or-later. The GPL license applies to the library source code. The underlying KyFromAbove data is public government data and carries no additional use restrictions beyond those noted above.
